Hate Crimes

What is the definition of a hate crime?

In California, hate crimes are defined by the California Penal Code, Section 13023. A hate crime is any criminal act, or attempted criminal act, motivated by hatred based on race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, or gender.

  • Examples of hate crimes include:
    – Acts which result in injury, even if injury is slight.
    – Threats of violence that look like they can be carried out.
    – Acts which result in property damage.
    – Any criminal act or attempted criminal act, including property damage, directed against public or private agencies.
